Indict Finder

Paste cards, yours or an opponent's, and find what the un-highlighted text concedes.

Indict Finder reads the part of a cut card nobody highlighted, and tells you when it undercuts the tag. Paste a stack of cards and it checks each one for material the cutter buried instead of read: an overclaim the tag makes that the rest of the paragraph does not back up, a sentence nearby that argues the other way, or context that changes what the highlighted part actually means.

The two modes

A toggle at the top picks whose cards you are checking. The analysis itself is identical either way; only the framing and what you get back changes.

  • My cards: audit your own evidence before someone else finds the hole. Alongside anything wrong, you also get what to strengthen (worth-reading material you didn't highlight) and, for many findings, a one-click fix.
  • Their cards: paste an opponent's case and find what their own evidence concedes, phrased as something to read back to them in round.

How to use it

  1. Open Indict Finder from the Tools menu.
  2. Pick My cards or Their cards.
  3. Copy cards from a Google Doc and paste them into the left box (Cmd/Ctrl+V). Up to 25 cards run in one check; paste more and you'll be asked to split it into a second check.
  4. Click Check N cards. Cards run three at a time; each one's status updates live (waiting, checking, done, or failed) so you don't wait on the whole batch to see the first result.
  5. Results land on the right, one per card: the card's own text (what it originally highlighted, muted gray) with any finding highlighted in your own highlight color, followed by the in-round line for each finding.
  6. A card that fails gets its own Try this card again button; it re-runs just that card without opening a new check.

What counts as a finding

Every finding is one of three kinds, and every one is a verbatim quote from the card's own un-highlighted text, never invented or paraphrased:

  • Overclaim: the tag says more than the highlighted text actually supports.
  • Contrary evidence: a nearby sentence argues the other way.
  • Missing context: something the highlighted portion needs to be read fairly.

A card with nothing wrong is a real, expected result, not a failure: it comes back labeled "No indict found in this card's own text." rather than a forced weak finding.

My cards: strengthen and fix

My cards mode does two things Their cards does not:

  • Make it stronger. A separate list of sentences worth reading that were not highlighted, each with what it adds. These are drawn from the same un-highlighted text as findings, but say the opposite thing: read this, not fix this.
  • A fix per finding, where one exists: extend the highlighting to cover more of the source, narrow the tag to a claim the card actually supports (written out ready to paste), or a note that the card needs new evidence entirely. Not every finding gets a fix; a finding without one still stands on its own.
  • Apply suggestions, when a fix is mechanical (narrowing the tag, or promoting a strengthen into the highlighted text). One click rewrites the card in place, no cut spent, and a Before/After toggle lets you compare the two versions before you copy either one.

Reading their highlighting

For Their cards, a small toggle above the results switches how their own highlighting is drawn: Gray (the default, muting what they already read so the un-highlighted indict stands out) or Original colors (their document's real highlight colors, for checking the card against the source it came from).

Copying results

Each card has its own Copy card button, and finished cards can be copied together with Copy all cards, both formatted for Google Docs or Word with the indict highlighting intact. Only finished cards are included; a card still checking or one that failed is left out rather than copied half-done.

Limits and cost

  • Free: 3 runs total (a lifetime trial, it does not reset). Pro: 30 runs per month.
  • One run is one paste-and-check, no matter how many cards are in it, up to 25 cards per run.
  • A retry does not spend a new run. Retrying a failed card meters against the run it already belongs to.

Common problems

  • "We couldn't find a cut card in that paste." Indict Finder reads the same formatting Rhetorify does (bold tag, bold citation, highlighting). Paste from the original document, not as plain text.
  • "Runs up to 25 cards at a time." Split a bigger paste into two checks.
  • A card shows an error. Click Try this card again; the rest of the run keeps going regardless.
  • Don't have their case to paste? Use Block Builder to find and cut evidence against the argument instead.
  • Rhetorify: the sibling paste-based tool; condenses instead of checking.
  • Recut: re-cut a card from scratch instead of checking its existing cut.
  • Block Builder: build responses when you don't have the opponent's case to paste.
